Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham, Chelsea, and Manchester City all advanced directly to the knockout stage. However, a dramatic final day saw European giants like Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain unexpectedly drop into the play-offs, while Napoli were eliminated entirely.

In one of the day's most stunning moments, Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin scored a 98th-minute header, securing a crucial result that kept Jose Mourinho's side in the competition.

Following a 1-1 draw at PSG, Newcastle now face a two-legged play-off tie in February against either Monaco or Qarabag. Should they advance, a tough last-16 clash against Barcelona or Chelsea awaits.

Last-16 Draw Scenarios Unveiled

As league phase winners, Arsenal will face one of Atalanta, Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Dortmund, or Olympiacos. Mikel Arteta's side became the first team to win all eight league phase matches since the format's introduction last season, capping their run with a 3-2 victory over Kairat at the Emirates.

Liverpool and Tottenham, who finished third and fourth respectively, are set to play one of Juventus, Atletico Madrid, Club Brugge, or Galatasaray. Arne Slot's Liverpool continued their impressive European form with a 6-0 demolition of Qarabag at Anfield, while Spurs secured their spot with a 2-0 win in Frankfurt.

Chelsea, who clinched a dramatic 3-2 comeback win at Napoli thanks to a second-half brace from Joao Pedro, will be drawn against PSG, Newcastle, Monaco, or Qarabag.

Manchester City, who narrowly secured eighth place with a 2-0 win over Galatasaray, face a daunting last-16 draw against Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Bodo/Glimt, or Benfica.

Path to the Final Takes Shape

The draw structure also offers a glimpse at potential future matchups. Arsenal and Manchester City have been placed in the same bracket, setting up a possible quarter-final collision. Meanwhile, Liverpool and Tottenham cannot meet in the last eight but could face Chelsea or Newcastle.

By finishing in the top four, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Tottenham have earned the advantage of playing the second leg of their last-16 and potential quarter-final ties at home. The Gunners' top-two finish also guarantees them a home second leg should they reach the semi-finals.

The other clubs securing automatic qualification were Bayern Munich (second), Barcelona (fifth), and Sporting Lisbon (seventh). Sporting sealed their spot with a 94th-minute winner at Athletic Bilbao, a goal that pushed Real Madrid down into the play-offs.

Managers React to Gruelling Schedule

Avoiding the February play-offs is a significant advantage, offering teams a much-needed break for recovery and preparation. Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior highlighted its importance, stating, "That's huge. It gives us a chance to really work with the players on the training ground. I'm delighted that we're through in this manner."

In contrast, Newcastle now face a congested February with eight matches, including Premier League fixtures, a Carabao Cup semi-final, and an FA Cup tie.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe remained pragmatic about the challenge ahead. "Of course we wanted to go through automatically, but we won't look at those games as a negative," he said. "We're in a busy schedule and have had a lot of games this season, but we have a conscientious group of players and this is just another challenge they've got to rise to."

The play-off round, with its draw scheduled for Friday, promises some heavyweight encounters. Jose Mourinho's Benfica could face his former club Real Madrid, while PSG may be drawn into an all-French tie against Monaco.
