Turkish football rocked by suspension of 149 referees amidst gambling probe

Turkish football has been thrown into chaos after the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) announced the suspension of 149 referees as part of an explosive betting scandal that has sent shockwaves through the sport.

With investigations revealing widespread gambling activity among match officials, the scandal marks one of the most damaging ethical crises in the history of Turkish football.

According to TFF president Ibrahim Haciosmanoglu, the investigation uncovered that 371 of the country’s 571 registered referees held betting accounts, with 152 actively gambling on matches, including high-level fixtures.

He revealed cases ranging from one-time bets to breathtaking extremes, such as one referee placing 18,227 wagers and 42 others placing more than 1,000 bets each.

In a firm address, Haciosmanoglu declared, “There is a moral crisis in Turkish football. The fundamental problem… is an ethical one,” adding that the federation relied on state-sourced data to expose the violations.

The TFF published the full list of suspended officials and indicated that sanctions were determined based on the severity of each case. Findings have also been forwarded to FIFA and UEFA, underlining the magnitude of the scandal.

The revelations have sparked intense fallout, with major clubs and figures weighing in. Fenerbahce representatives, long vocal critics of alleged referee manipulation, described the scandal as validation of their claims.

Former managers like José Mourinho, who previously hinted at systemic corruption in Turkish officiating, now appear vindicated.

Turkish prosecutors have already merged multiple investigations into a broader probe that may soon implicate footballers and club personnel, with journalist Murat Agirel warning that “this is just the beginning.”

As the TFF braces for legal proceedings and long-term reform, Turkish football stands on the brink of major structural changes that could determine whether the league emerges stronger or remains overshadowed by mistrust and controversy.
