The Fulham midfielder is steadily climbing the ranks to become Nigeria’s most-capped player. Troost-Ekong believes the former Arsenal star has the longevity and quality to surpass the current milestone.

Iwobi earned his 78th cap for Nigeria in their recent 2-1 victory over Benin in a World Cup qualifier. He is now just 23 appearances shy of Ahmed Musa, who holds the record with 101 caps for the national team.

What Ekong said

In addition to his international achievements, Iwobi recently became the first Nigerian player to make 300 appearances in the Premier League, a feat Troost-Ekong highlighted as a significant accomplishment.

"For him to be the Nigerian player with the most Premier League appearances, with all the names that we’ve had there before, is something special," Troost-Ekong said.

"He’s set to break all the records that we have here in the coming years," the captain continued.

He continued, "He is a player who has grown to become so mature. So, when we talk about leadership in our team, Alex is definitely a big part of that."

Should Nigeria qualify for the next FIFA World Cup, it would mark a second tournament appearance for Iwobi, who was part of the Super Eagles squad at the 2018 edition in Russia.
