Transfer News: Premier League champions Liverpool want assurance from #271bn target before making move

Liverpool are reportedly seeking specific assurances from Florian Wirtz before they commit to a firm offer for his services this summer.

While the Bayer Leverkusen man had been widely considered a natural successor to Kevin De Bruyne, who is set to depart the Etihad Stadium at the end of his contract, the Cityzens have reportedly cooled their interest.

Although Pep Guardiola's side explored a potential deal for Wirtz, reports now indicate that they have stepped back from their pursuit due to Leverkusen's hefty valuation, believed to be around €150 million (£126.3 million).

The beaten FA Cup finalists are now thought to be focusing on Nottingham Forest's Morgan Gibbs-White instead.

City dropping out could pave the way for the Reds to make a move for the 22-year-old, who flourished under Xabi Alonso. 

According to Sky Sports, the Premier League champions are indeed interested in bringing Wirtz to the Premier League. 

However, the Merseyside club reportedly wants a clear indication from the player that he genuinely desires a move away from the Bundesliga before they intensify their efforts.

Currently, Anfield does not appear to be the most likely destination for Wirtz, who is widely expected to either join Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, with whom he has reportedly agreed personal terms, or remain at Leverkusen for another season.

After a quiet first summer window, Arne Slot’s side have moved to get their business done early this time, with Wirtz’s club teammate Jeremie Frimpong nearing a switch and Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez said to be on the Merseyside club’s shortlist. 

Liverpool will close out the season with Sunday’s Premier League clash with Crystal Palace at Anfield. 

The Reds have failed to win their previous three encounters since claiming the title.
