'Today Could Be the Last Day' - Eliud Kipchoge Reveals Powerful Mindset That Drives His Running
Marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge has offered candid insights into his philosophy on life and running during a press event for Huawei's new product launch in Madrid.
The Kenyan icon, widely regarded as the greatest marathoner in history, holds two consecutive Olympic gold medals from the 2016 and 2020 Games.
In 2019, Eliud Kipchoge made history by becoming the first person to run a marathon in under two hours, clocking an unofficial time of 1:59:40.
Eliud Kipchoge is also a former world record holder, having clocked a stunning 2:01:09 performance at the 2022 Berlin Marathon.
Eliud Kipchoge: The Drive to Inspire
When asked what fuels his relentless training regimen, Kipchoge pointed to two key factors. "First, I really love running," he stated, as quoted by Fanatik.
"Second, the connection with people. I share my stories on social media; people follow me and send me messages. When people from South America and the Middle East tell me that I inspire them, it motivates me to go to training at 5 in the morning."
Reflecting on his numerous achievements, Eliud Kipchoge identified breaking the two-hour barrier as his proudest moment.
"I am most proud of going under two hours," he explained. "Not just for myself, but for everyone. The best part of life is to push yourself. We are not limitless, but we have to keep moving forward."
To combat motivational slumps, Eliud Kipchoge shared a powerful mental strategy. "The best thing is to say to yourself every day, 'Today could be the last day,'" he advised. "The most powerful motivation comes from within: knowing who you are, loving what you do, and moving on."
Eliud Kipchoge: A Partnership Built on Shared Values
The five-time Berlin Marathon champion also discussed his new partnership with technology giant Huawei, emphasising a shared vision.
"The reason I am cooperating with Huawei is that we have the same values," he said. "We have a vision for the next generation. We want to create a movement in this world. If you really move, you contribute to health. This is the real hope of Huawei. And my hope... is to make the world a better place through movement."
He explained his decision to align with a tech-focused brand as a natural evolution. "The world is moving towards technology. As an athlete, I wanted to combine sports and technology," Kipchoge noted. "I believe in Huawei's philosophy because Huawei covers everyone. I care that people can track their heartbeat, sleep, steps, activities... That's why I'm working with Huawei."
The legendary runner was involved in the development of the new WATCH GT Runner 2, contributing his expertise to enhance the user experience for athletes at all levels.
Eliud Kipchoge highlighted specific features, such as the "Smart Marathon Mode," which allows users to set a goal time and receive intelligent analysis to improve performance.
He also praised features beneficial for everyday runners, like the Heart Rate Alert, which helps users maintain an ideal pace by notifying them if their heart rate is too high or low.
