Timothy Ouma: Coach Details Precaution Behind Early Substitution of Harambee Stars Midfielder
Coach Niels Frederiksen once again placed his trust in Timothy Ouma, who, after a three-game spell on the sidelines, was immediately reinstated into the starting eleven for his first appearance since November 9.
However, pairing the Harambee Stars midfielder with Filip Jagiello in midfield proved to be a poor decision by the coaching staff. From the very beginning of the match, the midfield was nonexistent, with the two central midfielders failing to cooperate.
As early as the fifth minute, it was evident that the midfield was a weak area. Moments later, Adrian Dalmau beat Mateusz Skrzypczak and took a shot from close range, which was miraculously saved by Bartosz Mrozek.
Timothy Ouma also received a yellow card from referee Szymon Marciniak for a foul on the left flank minutes later. At that point, Timothy Ouma was already a prime candidate for substitution.
The coaching staff reacted, making the substitution just six minutes after the booking. In that time, the defensive midfielder, who lacked focus from the start and struggled on the heavy pitch, managed to avoid a second yellow card, saving his team from going down to ten men.
Lech Poznan: Coach Niels Frederiksen Explains Reason for Substituting Timothy Ouma
Coach Niels Frederiksen explained that Timothy Ouma was substituted as a precaution due to a yellow card he had received.
He noted that while Timothy Ouma was capable of continuing with caution, the match had been particularly intense, with numerous duels and physical challenges.
The coach added that the pitch conditions made further fouls likely, and he did not want to risk a second booking, which could have had serious consequences.
“Timothy Ouma had a yellow card, and we all remember what happened in Gdynia. It's not that this player can't play with a yellow card, but there was a lot going on in that match, a lot of fighting and duels,” he shared as quoted by KKSlech.
“This pitch was conducive to further fouls, I didn't want to take any risks. Just imagine what the reaction would have been if he had received a second yellow card. I wanted to protect the player, there were various aspects, and that was the reason for the substitution."
In the match, Piast Gliwice suffered a 2-0 home defeat against Lech Poznan, who secured the three points thanks to goals from Jesper Karlström and Kristoffer Velde. The victory was crucial for Lech Poznan in their pursuit of the top spots in the league table.
