Hosted on home soil at the National Stadium in Lagos, this monumental victory not only marked Nigeria's emergence as a powerhouse in African football.
NFF celebrate Super Eagles of Nigeria AFCON 45 years later
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and official Super Eagles social media accounts celebrated the AFCON triumph 45 years later.
Along with a photo of the team was a message that said, "On This Day in 1980, we won our first ever Afcon.
"It’s been 45 Years of Glory! Celebrating Nigeria’s AFCON Triumphs
"From 1980, 1994, to 2013, the Super Eagles have soared to greatness, etching Nigeria’s name in African football history! 🦅🔥
"Today, we honor the legendary heroes who paved the way—lifting the trophy, inspiring generations, and making Nigeria proud!
"To every fan who has stood by the team through victories and challenges—this is for you!."
Nigeria wins AFCON in 1980
The 1980 AFCON was the 12th edition of the tournament and Nigeria, as the host nation, entered the competition with high expectations.
Led by iconic captain, Christian Chukwu, the team included Segun Odegbami, Emmanuel Okala, and Muda Lawal, whose contributions on the pitch were vital.
In the group stage, Nigeria finished top of Group A with victories over Egypt, Côte d'Ivoire, alongside a draw against Tanzania.
In the semi-finals, the Super Eagles faced Morocco, securing a 1–0 victory and went on to claim their first AFCON defeating Algeria.
