Inside Chuba Alpom transfer chaos

Birmingham City were certain they had their man. The medical was arranged, Ajax had agreed, and all that was left was for Chuba Akpom to sign the dotted line.

Then came Ipswich Town with a late bid that turned the whole deal upside down. Akpom abandoned his Birmingham medical, heading straight for Suffolk to complete one with Ipswich instead.

Even after Birmingham returned with a better offer, one Ajax themselves preferred, the forward refused to budge.

Middlesbrough, Lens, and Olympiakos also tested the waters, but none could sway him from his chosen path. For Akpom, Ipswich was the right stage to revive his career after being sidelined in Amsterdam.

Golden Boot winner now ready for new challenge

For Ipswich, Akpom isn’t a gamble, as he is a proven scorer, with a stellar record in England’s Championship division.

The 29-year-old lifted the Championship Golden Boot in 2022-23, with a career that’s seen him rack up 139 Football League appearances across six clubs.

A Hale End Academy graduate, he’s played for Brentford, Coventry City, Brighton, Hull City, and Nottingham Forest, before making waves at PAOK in Greece and later joining Ajax.

Last season’s loan to Lille gave him Ligue 1 experience, but now his focus is purely on the Tractor Boys. His debut could arrive in the Carabao Cup against Bromley.
