Thomas Tuchel is reportedly set to sign a contract extension to remain as England manager, a move that would keep him with the national team until 2028.

The German tactician, formerly of Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, and Bayern Munich, was appointed in January 2025 on an 18-month contract specifically to lead the Three Lions through their 2026 World Cup campaign.

However, talkSPORT understands that a new deal is imminent, which would see him also oversee the team's Euro 2028 journey, a tournament England will co-host with Scotland, Wales, and Ireland.

This development comes as a significant setback for Premier League clubs, particularly Manchester United, who had reportedly placed Tuchel high on their list of potential managerial candidates.

An official announcement from the FA could come as early as Thursday, ahead of the draw for the 2026/27 Nations League.

Impressive Start Under Tuchel

Since taking the helm, Tuchel has guided England through 10 matches, securing victory in nine of them. The team's only blemish was a 3-1 friendly defeat to Senegal last June.

His tenure has been highlighted by a flawless World Cup qualification campaign. England won all eight of their group stage matches, scoring an impressive 22 goals without conceding a single one, comfortably booking their place at the tournament which kicks off on June 11.

England's first World Cup match is scheduled against Croatia on June 17. Before then, the team will play friendlies against Uruguay and Japan during the March international break, followed by final warm-up games against New Zealand and Costa Rica.

His decision to extend his stay with the England national team leaves United with one less option as they continue to assess candidates before settling on their man at the end of the season.

Who are the Other United Candidates?

Other names floated around include Paris Saint-Germain boss Luis Enrique, Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti, USA head coach Mauricio Pochettino and Italian Roberto De Zerbi who has parted ways with Marseille this week.

However, among all those candidates, only De Zerbi is available immediately and it is still not known if the others will be ready to leave their roles after the 2026 World Cup.

Enrique is reported to be not convinced with the United job while a move for Ancelotti and Pochettino will hinge on how their sides perform at the World Cup.

That could leave current United interim manager Michael Carrick with a big chance of landing the job if he continues impressing after starting his role with four straight wins before a draw on Tuesday.
