Amid speculation linking Pitso Mosimane with a sensational return to Mamelodi Sundowns, former star striker Katlego Mphela has raised doubts about whether the decorated coach could successfully work alongside the club's current sporting director, Flemming Berg.

Mphela, who played under Pitso Mosimane at SuperSport United, Mamelodi Sundowns, and for the South African national team, believes the coach's desire for control could lead to a clash with the club's hierarchy.

In an exclusive interview with Soccer Laduma, the retired forward, nicknamed ‘Killer,’ suggested that Mosimane's preference for managing his own recruitment and technical staff might not align with the existing structure at Sundowns.

"The Pitso I know... I don't think they will work well together," Mphela stated. "But you never know in football, because Pitso likes being in control of the whole set-up, which is why he has his own technical team. He likes signing his own players, so I'm not sure if he can work with this one. I'm not convinced."

Mphela did concede that the situation could be different if Mosimane were to bring in his own handpicked sporting director.

"Maybe his own sporting director, whom he recommended, could work," he added. "I'm not sure about this one (Flemming Berg) because there have already been talks of complaints from fans and other people that they don't really need him."

Despite his reservations about the internal dynamics, Mphela fully endorsed the idea of Pitso Mosimane returning from a footballing perspective, citing their shared history of success.

"Honestly speaking, in terms of football, they achieved things together and complemented each other," he reflected.

"He brought back the winning ways at Sundowns, the philosophy. He won the Champions League and the league with them. He improved players, and players went overseas, including Bongani Zungu, Keagan Dolly, and others. So, in terms of football, I don't see any problem."

Pitso Mosimane enjoyed a highly successful eight-year tenure with the Brazilians from 2012 to 2020, securing numerous domestic titles and conquering the continent with the 2016 CAF Champions League trophy.

The celebrated South African coach later joined Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly, where he won the Champions League twice more before his departure.
