REPORT: Chelsea chasing world-class goalkeeper in change of transfer strategy

Chelsea have reportedly escalated their attempts to sign a new goalkeeper this summer, with head coach Enzo Maresca keen to strengthen this key area. 

Reports suggest the London club has initiated contact with AC Milan regarding French international Mike Maignan.

The Blues are actively seeking a top-tier goalkeeper for the upcoming transfer window, and Maignan has emerged as a high-priority target. 

As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea have engaged with the Italian giants, capitalising on the fact that Maignan is yet to agree to new contract terms at the San Siro.

Romano reports that the 29-year-old has long been admired by Chelsea's scouting and recruitment teams, valued for his commanding presence and impressive distribution. 

The France international has become one of Europe’s finest goalkeepers since his move to Milan from Lille in 2021, playing a crucial role in the Rossoneri’s Serie A title victory in 2021–22.

The Blues’ current goalkeeping options, including Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen, have faced scrutiny throughout the past season, with neither fully convincing the club. 

Signing Maignan would represent a seeming change of transfer strategy for the London club, as they have typically opted for signings under 25 to fit into their broader approach to acquire a young team with room to grow. 

Chelsea secured Conference League success last Wednesday and will begin their Club World Cup campaign against Los Angeles FC on June 16.
