Real Madrid is reportedly looking to finalise their roster with the signing of Trey Lyles, according to encestando.

The Canadian-born forward is currently a free agent after his contract with the Sacramento Kings concluded.

At 29 years old and standing 6-foot-9, Lyles plays as a power forward. He declared for the NBA Draft at 19, where he was selected 12th overall in the first round by the Utah Jazz.

He spent two seasons with the Jazz, followed by another two with the Denver Nuggets. His career also includes stints with the San Antonio Spurs and Detroit Pistons before a three-and-a-half-season tenure in Sacramento.

Throughout his NBA career, Lyles has played in 650 games, boasting a 35% success rate from three-point range and averaging 7.6 points per game.

Given his natural position as a power forward, it appears Real Madrid will likely shift another player, such as Hezonja or Abalde, to a different role. The difficulty in acquiring a shooting guard, which was initially the team's priority, likely prompted this strategic move.

Why Europe Is the Best Destination For Trey Lyles

If Lyles was only being offered veteran minimum deals from NBA teams, likely given the timing in the offseason, a shorter European contract similar to Vezenkov’s salary likely represented a raise, according to Sports Illustrated.

Beyond that, he will probably enjoy an expanded role; Lyles has never averaged more than 20 minutes per game in the NBA, making the chance to play a key role overseas very appealing.

Kings fans may recognise Real Madrid primarily for soccer, but their basketball program is among Europe’s most storied. Luka Doncic began his professional career there, and current roster members include former NBA players Facundo Campazzo, Theo Maledon, Chuma Okeke, Mario Hezonja, Usman Garuba, and Bruno Fernando.

The club also hosted 2025 first-round pick Hugo Gonzalez last season, highlighting their willingness to attract top global talent.

Though coming off a down year, Lyles was widely respected as a rotational forward who could occasionally play centre, making him a versatile option.

His skill set, heady with the ball and capable of spacing the floor, should translate well to the EuroLeague, especially for a team that will feature Garuba and Fernando at center, both of whom are not strong shooters.

Lyles’ departure, along with Jake LaRavia signing with the Lakers, leaves Sacramento thin in the frontcourt. Both players were the most plausible backups at the 4 spot, leaving Keegan Murray as the lone big wing an ongoing challenge for the Kings.

The team still needs to address a surplus of 1-3 positional players, many of whom lack the length or strength to guard elite scorers like LeBron James or Luka Doncic.

While Mike Brown and De’Aaron Fox will return to Golden 1 Center this season, fans will not get a chance to give Lyles an ovation. Best of luck to him overseas.
