If you have ever wondered how bad it is financially to miss out on the final stages of the UEFA Champions League, you now have your answer.
After being eliminated by Manchester City in the UCL semifinals, Real Madrid are now set to miss out on at least ₦9.95 billion or €20 million in prize money alone.
Real Madrid humiliated in Manchester City loss
Los Blancos were handing the beating of a lifetime in a 4-0 reverse at the Etihad as Manchester City roared to a famous victory in the club’s history, condemning Real Madrid to a semifinal exit in the 2022/23 European campaign.
Real Madrid suffered many losses, after being dethroned as kings of Europe and also losing some dignity in their joint-biggest loss in a European campaign, but the financial losses that Los Blancos incurred will also cut as deep as the literal and philosophical ones.
Real Madrid miss out on €20 million prize
The Spanish giants’ journey to the UEFA Champions League semifinal saw them claim €60 million over the course of the season, but they stood to gain a significant windfall if they had overcome the Cityzens to reach a second consecutive final.

Reaching the final alone would have earned them an additional €15.5m guaranteed to the finalists while winning the final would have come with a prize of €4.5m.
By virtue of their semifinal loss, Real Madrid missed out on both prizes and would now have to watch either Manchester City or Inter claim the rewards for reaching the final.
