Rayo Vallecano vs Real Madrid: Title boost for Barcelona as Los Blancos drop points

Rayo Vallecano have now taken a point from both Real Madrid and Barcelona as they held Los Blancos to draw, ensuring Xabi Alonso's side go into the international break without a win.

Real Madrid began strongly, controlling territory and probing ways through, yet their attacks lacked penetration. In the first half, Madrid created clear chances.

Vinícius Júnior saw a cut-back shot saved, and Raúl Asencio missed a one-on-one with Batalla just before half-time. 

Rayo sat deep, compact and disciplined, thwarting Madrid while looking to hit them on fast breaks, as they have come to be famed for.

The second half followed a similar tone: Madrid pressed, Rayo absorbed, but breakthroughs didn’t come. Rayo themselves offered glimpses of danger, including a late header by Jorge De Frutos that sailed narrowly over, yet their counterattacks lacked the final ball. 

Xabi Alonso did try to force the issue, inserting fresh legs at intervals. His effort failed to yield fruit, however, as the tier remained deadlocked.

The draw is an excellent result for Rayo, a trend against top sides. For Real Madrid, however, the draw is a setback in their title push. While they retain top spot, Barcelona now have the chance to narrow the gap to three points, and Los Blancos will know they missed an opportunity to pull further clear.
