Former Barcelona president Joan Gaspart has fired back at Athletic Club captain Inaki Williams for accusing the Blaugrana of employing media propaganda after his brother rejected them to sign a contract extension at his boyhood club.

What Gaspart said

Gaspart was the president of Barcelona during an unsuccessful spell between 2000 and 2003, exemplified by the loss of Luis Figo to eternal rivals Real Madrid

During a conversation with El 10 del Barca, he commented on the failed pursuit for Nico Williams and the subsequent signing of Marcus Rashford, opining that the Blaugrana ended up with the better player.

He explained that Barcelona used to have a cordial relationship with Los Leones during his time as president, and, hence, he expressed his surprise at Athletic Club’s angry reaction to Barcelona's attempts to sign Williams.

"First of all, for me, Marcus Rashford is better than Nico,” he said, per Goal. “From here on, I don’t care what Inaki might say. The player has used us in a good way, he’s gotten a good contract, and I’m happy for him.

“I don’t understand Athletic’s anger. I’ve signed many players from Bilbao, like Zubizarreta and always got along with their president. This is in the past. We have to focus on the season and trust the squad and the exceptional coach we have."
