Kenya are hoping to get to the latter stages of the competition but face a major hurdle to get past their group as they are in a tough pool that has Morocco, DR Congo, Angola and Zambia.

Harambee Stars qualified by virtue of being co-hosts alongside Uganda and Tanzania, and for all 19 teams set to feature, there is a bumper prize money in waiting.

This follows a 75 per cent increase in prize money from tournament organisers the Confederation of African Football (CAF) who have set aside $10.4 million (Ksh1.34 billion) to be distributed to teams at the tournament.

Harambee Stars, just like all the participating teams are guaranteed at least $200,000 (Ksh26 million) as this is what will be awarded to countries that finish bottom of groups that have four or five teams.

What Else is in Store for Harambee Stars and Co?

Kenya are among sides in five-team groups and if Benni McCarthy’s men hugely disappoint and end up bottom of Group A, they are guaranteed Ksh26 million from the tournament.

However, if Harambee Stars finish fourth or higher in Group A, they will take home $300,000 (Ksh38.7 million) and the money will increase as they progress.

If they make it past the ‘Group of Death’, Kenya, like all the other quarter-finalists, will pocket $450,000 (Ksh58 million) and the amount will rise if they reach the semi-final.

At the delayed 2024 tournament, winners will now pocket $3.5 million (Ksh451 million) while runners-ups take home $1.2 million (Ksh155 million) as $700,000 (Ksh90 million) and $600,000 (Ksh77 million) goes to teams that finish third and fourth respectively.

That certainly adds to the motivation for Harambee Stars whose players will also use the tournament to market themselves to teams abroad.
