Portugal 2-2 Spain: Ronaldo wins Nations League with Portugal after trophyless season at Al Nassr

Cristiano Ronaldo has once again proven his enduring class by helping Portugal secure the European Nations League title in a dramatic final against Spain. 

Despite Spain entering the match as heavy favourites and taking an early lead through Zubimendi, Portugal showed resilience and determination to claim victory.

Spain’s early dominance saw Zubimendi put La Roja ahead in the first half, but the lead lasted just five minutes before the impressive Nuno Mendes fired Portugal level. 

The goal revitalised the Portuguese side, who controlled much of the remainder of the first half. 

However, Spain struck back before halftime when Mikel Oyarzabal restored Spain’s advantage.

Facing a deficit at halftime, Portugal’s captain and talisman, Cristiano Ronaldo, rolled back the years by tapping in to equalise, sending the game into extra time. 

Neither side could break the deadlock in extra time, leading to a nerve-wracking penalty shootout.

After three successful penalties each, Spain faltered first when Alvaro Morata’s tame spot-kick was brilliantly saved by Portugal’s goalkeeper Diogo Jota. 

The stage was then set for ex-Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves, who calmly converted his penalty to clinch the Nations League trophy for Portugal.

The victory was a moment of immense relief and joy for Ronaldo, who admitted he couldn’t watch the shootout due to the pressure. 

This latest medal adds to Ronaldo’s illustrious career, reinforcing his status as one of football’s all-time greats and a true leader for his national team.
