Pitch Work Intensifies at Talanta Stadium Amid Growing Doubts Over AFCON 2027
Even as rumours swirl around about the possible postponement of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, Kenya is determined to have the main venue ready in time.
Talanta Stadium, the ultra-modern 60,000-seater stadium has been undergoing construction for nearly two years and so far, the stadium is over 85 per cent complete.
With the exterior completed, attention has shifted to the inside, where seat installation is among works set to commence soon.
However, one critical aspect of the stadium that needs great care is the pitch and here is where the focus is currently.
As per the latest photos from the facility, the attention has shifted to the playing surface which started with a modern drainage system under the turf that meets international standards. This is aimed at keeping the field playable even during heavy rains with works on this having taken place between January and December.
Why Pitch Will Be Last to Complete
Now, the underground works are complete but there will be a well detailed plan to follow before the grass is planted given the intricacies involved in having the pitch laid as per the requirements of world football governing body FIFA and Confederation of African Football (CAF).
“The last bit that is most critical for football is the pitch itself. The drainage system is being done and finally, we will have the grass done,” Defence Principal Secretary Dr Patrick Mariru said during a tour of the stadium last month.
“According to the requirements of CAF and FIFA, we will have the grass grown naturally. We are going to plant the grass and it will take two-three months. We will leave it to grow naturally. That we cannot speed up, but everything else will be done as we have said.”
With the grass taking time to mature, this will give time to the contractor to complete the other things inside the stadium, which also has two outdoor pitches which will be used as training grounds.
Talanta Stadium will be the main host venue for AFCON 2027 matches in Kenya alongside Kasarani, which has closed for renovations.
