Fresh from winning the 2025 Onze d’Or, the French winger has fired a shot at football’s obsession with statistics.

PSG star Ousmane Dembele has celebrated winning the 2025 Onze d'Or beating Lamine Yamal to win the award.

“Personally, I’ve never been attracted by stats. It never really motivated me. Sometimes people don’t watch the matches, they only remember the goalscorer or the passer, but in the analysis of the match, there are other very important players,” he explained.

For a player often scrutinised during his turbulent Barcelona spell, Dembele’s comments highlight a career built on flair, creativity, and influence rather than cold numbers.

Yet, ironically, it is those same numbers, 33 goals and 15 assists across all competitions last season, that have pushed him to the top of the Ballon d’Or conversation.

From setbacks to stardom at PSG

Dembele’s resurgence has been remarkable. After six inconsistent years in Spain, he has flourished under Luis Enrique’s guidance in Paris, inspiring PSG to their long-awaited Champions League crown.

His dazzling form has restored his reputation and secured him recognition alongside legends like Lionel Messi, a four-time Onze d’Or winner.

Reflecting on his journey, the 28-year-old was full of pride. “It proves that you’ve worked hard throughout the season, and even over the years, to earn individual trophies. My sacrifices and performances are being recognised, and that touches me deeply,” he said.

Whether or not he lifts the Ballon d’Or, Dembele has already achieved something just as important: redefining himself as one of Europe’s truly elite players.
