Patrice Motsepe: CAF President Flies to Senegal to Calm Tensions After AFCON 2025 Controversy
The controversy surrounding the unfinished 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final has escalated tensions between Senegal and Morocco, prompting a direct intervention from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) president.
Widespread anger erupted in Senegalese sporting circles after CAF's disciplinary committee awarded the title to Morocco, a decision Senegal has fiercely contested. The Senegalese Football Federation has since lodged a formal appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), arguing that its team's withdrawal from the final was due to "compelling" circumstances.
While CAF has attempted to de-escalate the situation with carefully worded statements, public and political pressure in Dakar has continued to mount, leading CAF President Patrice Motsepe to step in personally.
Roots of the Crisis
The dispute began during a chaotic final in Casablanca. The match between Morocco and Senegal was disrupted by turmoil in the stands and on-field clashes, which led to the Senegalese team initially withdrawing. They later returned to the pitch and secured a 1-0 victory.
However, the CAF Disciplinary Committee subsequently overturned the result, declaring Morocco the winner with a 3-0 scoreline. The Senegalese Football Federation immediately filed a formal objection, labeling the ruling "unfair" and demanding a review.
Weeks after the incident, CAF has yet to officially declare Morocco as the champion, leaving the final decision pending the outcome of the CAS appeal.
Motsepe's Diplomatic Mission
In an effort to contain the escalating crisis, CAF President Patrice Motsepe is set to travel to Senegal. According to Senegalese journalist Lassana Camara, Motsepe is expected to arrive in Dakar for an official visit aimed at calming tensions and opening a dialogue with Senegalese officials.
The CAF president is scheduled to meet with representatives from the Senegalese Football Federation and the government on Tuesday. The goal of the meetings is to rebuild trust and find common ground before further legal proceedings unfold.
A Message of Reconciliation
Motsepe had previously signaled his intent to mediate during a press conference in Cairo on March 29, following a CAF Executive Committee meeting. He stated his commitment to "repair what can be repaired" by visiting both Senegal and Morocco.
"We will not allow football to cause tensions in the historic relationship between the Moroccan and Senegalese peoples," Motsepe affirmed at the time.
