The reigning Serie A champions have endured an underwhelming title defence so far with eight wins, four draws and four defeats, all of which have been on home soil.

The most recent defeat was a 1-0 loss at home to Empoli which reportedly sealed Garcia's fate and led to the reported appointment of Mazzarri.

The news of Mazzarri's appointment as Napoli boss has circulated in Italian media although it is still pending official confirmation from the club as is the imminent sack of Rudi Garcia.

Mazzarri joins the club until the end of the season to steady the ship as a cheaper alternative to their first choice, Igor Tudor.

Beyond his salary demands, Tudor also reportedly wanted a two-year contract which caused Napoli chairman Aurelio De Laurentiis to look elsewhere in search of a more suitable option.

The search led to the appointment of 62-year-old Mazzarri, the experienced Italian who had previously coached Napoli between 2009 and 2013.

Sampdoria, Inter Milan, Watford and Torino are some of the notable teams on his recent managerial record but he had been unemployed since a brief stint with Cagliari in 2022.
