Oblique Seville Gives Update After Surgery as he Details Major 200m Push Next Season
Oblique Seville has given a positive update following his toe surgery as he detailed bold plans for the 200m next season.
The reigning world champion had an operation to remove the nail from both big toes, which were becoming ingrown.
The procedure was performed by consultant orthopaedic surgeon and sports medicine physician Dr Akshai Mansingh after the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
Oblique Seville's agent, Norman Peart, confirmed the successful procedure and indicated that the athlete will require up to four weeks for recovery before returning to training, and he has disclosed that he will be resuming normal programming soon.
The 24-year-old athlete had previously revealed that he had been dealing with a toe injury since high school, an issue that had reportedly limited his participation in the 200m event over the years.
Oblique Seville Shares Crucial Update As He Unveils Plans for the 200m
Oblique Seville shared that despite feeling considerably stronger since his toe surgery, he recognises that his recovery journey is far from complete.
He admitted that, when comparing his current strength to that of his peers, he still feels far behind, almost as though he is still at a beginner’s stage.
Due to his condition, his coach has had to create a personalised training plan to accommodate his recovery needs and prevent further strain, but that is now behind him.
Oblique Seville noted that his progress over the past year has been significant, with noticeable gains that his teammates and support staff have also observed.
However, he emphasised that he still needs to build much more power before reaching his full potential, especially since his long-term goal includes competing seriously in the 200m, an event that demands not only speed but exceptional endurance.
“I'm 50% stronger, but I still need a lot of improvement, like a lot. When I look back at my career, I say, Jesus, I still feel like a high school athlete based on what these guys are lifting in the gym,” Oblique Seville said on the Mr. Analyst aka Leighton Levy YouTube Channel.
“My coach has to customise my program from everyone else because of my condition. When I look at last year, compared to this year, I have made a huge improvement, and everyone who knows me and is in my team knows what is going on.
“So, I know that for a fact that I have a lot of improvements to make. I need about 40% more strength. And I am good because you have to think about it, you know. I want to do the 200m, and the 200m comes with a lot of speed endurance.”
Oblique Seville explained that his focus moving forward is on developing greater speed endurance, which he understands is closely linked to building strength.
He noted that his training team has been adjusting his program to improve his power output without necessarily increasing his body weight, emphasising that true strength comes from efficiency rather than size.
The 24-year-old added that he has gained only a small amount of muscle mass but believes the work being done in the gym is pushing him in the right direction.
“Right now, my recovery process has been good, and I think I'm ready to start training. I'm going to be back soon,” he added.
Oblique Seville expressed his ambition to compete among the very best in the world over 200m, setting his sights on matching the standards of the top sprinters in that event.
He shared that his motivation for the distance runs deep, as he has always enjoyed the challenge and rhythm of the longer sprint, unlike the 400m, which he has little interest in pursuing.
“I want to be as good as the top three athletes in the world who run the 200m. My aim for that is very high, just as my 100m time,” he added.
“I am putting my confidence through the roof because I really, really want to run the 200, and it's an event I have wanted to run for so long because I enjoy doing it. I enjoy the longer distance.
“My aim is just to break 19…Wow. Sorry. It's to break 20 seconds, and then I can take it from there and see where my talent takes me.”
Oblique Seville’s renewed focus and growing strength could make him a serious contender in the 200m, setting up an exciting showdown with current event powerhouses Noah Lyles and Letsile Tebogo.
