IShowSpeed, real name Dareen Jason Watkins Jr, arrived in Kenya on Sunday as part of his 28-day tour of Africa known as “Speed Does Africa Tour” which had already taken him to South Africa, Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Rwanda, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

The 20-year-old was a big attraction as hundreds of thousands of his fans turned up in Nairobi to welcome him and he streamed his entire tour live, hitting 48 million subscribers on his YouTube channel, while gaining 360,000 new subscribers.

Speed visited a number of places in Nairobi, among them Upper Hill High School, where he met Kenyan javelin legend Juliu Yego, before proceeding to Uhuru Market, Nairobi National Park, Nairobi CBD and then had a chopper ride over the city’s skyline.

During his moment with Yego, the former world javelin champion, also known as the “YouTube man” after learning the craft by watching clips on YouTube, sought to give the American celebrity first-hand skills at the sport.

IShowSpeed Not Up to Speed With Javelin

In his first throw, Speed watched in disappointment as the javelin turned around in the air before hitting the ground as fans cheered him on at Upper Hill High School.

“You are good at that, it is not my thing,” he told Yego, who encouraged him to try one more time.

However, his second attempt still flopped before he asked Yego to do it, perhaps with the hopes of picking up instant lessons.

The 2015 world champion and 2016 Olympics silver medalist did it effortlessly and when he encouraged Speed to go for it again, the streamer was forthright.

“No. I don’t think I am going to get it. Javelin is not my thing,” he said as he walked away before taking a selfie with Yego.

Despite the failed attempt, Yego was thrilled to meet the young American, terming the moment a great opportunity to market Kenya.

“It’s magical Kenya indeed, look who I met today and shared a talent show with IShowSpeed. Karibu Kenya Darren Watkins, enjoy the city in the sun and the only place with a national park and pride of Africa, Nairobi Kenya,” Yego posted on Facebook.

The five-time African champion also encouraged young Kenyans to take advantage of the digital space and become content creators like Speed.

“Use that internet bundle to spread your content and positive vibes! You can be like IShowSpeed, just take a moment and make personal digestion of what benefits you in your posts! Just for thoughts. It was a great day with him #magicalkenya,” Yego wrote in another Facebook post.

Yego stole the spotlight after Africa’s fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala had turned down a chance to run against IShowSpeed, saying he represents top global brands and he could not be involved in such stunts for free.
