No Fear, No Problem: Super Eagles star leads Club Brugge into Barcelona den
Super Eagles star Raphael Onyedika is poised for an important role as Club Brugge prepares to host Barcelona in a highly anticipated midweek Champions League fixture.
The midfielder declared his readiness for the challenge after making a successful comeback from a five-week injury spell. Onyedika returned to the pitch on Saturday, helping his team secure a 2-1 victory over Dender in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League.
Coming on as a substitute for Romeo Vermant in the 63rd minute, Onyedika delivered a solid performance in his 27 minutes of action. He was efficient in possession, completing 35 passes, and contributed defensively with a tackle and an interception.
With the domestic league match behind them, Club Brugge's focus now shifts entirely to the formidable task of facing Barcelona at the Jan Breydel Stadium on Wednesday.
Despite Barcelona missing key players like Lamine Yamal and Raphinha, the Belgian side still enters the contest as the clear underdog. A positive result for Club Brugge would be considered a major upset.
What Onyedika said
Speaking after the win against Dender, Onyedika expressed confidence in his fitness and his team's mentality heading into the high-stakes European game.
"I'm missing some match practice now, but that short half-hour has given me confidence that I'll be ready for the match against Barcelona next Wednesday," Onyedika said.
"It's clear to me that it won't be an easy task, but everyone here is looking forward to it. We know what's coming, but we can't be afraid."
Historically, the odds are stacked against the Belgian club, having lost three of their last four encounters with the Catalan giants. However, they will be determined to leverage their home advantage and avoid another defeat.
Given his importance to the team, Onyedika is expected to feature in the starting lineup. However, his playing time may be managed as he continues to build match fitness following his recent layoff.
