Kenya had a dream start as Austin Odhiambo’s goal on the stroke of halftime won them the match, beating the two-time winners 2-0 at Kasarani Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Following the win, Harambee Stars players are now assured of Ksh1 million each courtesy of a pledge from President William Ruto made to them on Saturday morning.

The President announced a lucrative reward scheme for the Harambee Stars, saying each player and members of the technical bench, will receive Ksh1 million for every win and Ksh500,000 for every draw and the players responded with the win over the Congolese, having survived an early onslaught.

All eyes will now be on the President starting Monday to see if he lives up to the promise ahead of Kenya’s second game against Angola on Thursday.

Harambee Stars players have a chance to make up to Ksh4 million each if they can stay victorious across all their four group stage matches.

If they do or even manage to make it to the quarter-finals, then Ksh60 million will be waiting for them while Ksh70 million will be their reward for reaching the semi-finals.

Harambee Stars have a chance to earn Ksh600 million from the government if they win the CHAN 2024 tournament.

It remains to be seen if the motivation will lift the spirits of Benni McCarthy’s team but they will need to improve in their subsequent matches as they made a number of basic errors against DR Congo although the Congolese let them off the hook.

With COSAFA champions Angola and two-time winners Morocco coming up next, McCarthy will have to ensure his team cuts off all the mistakes to have a chance of another Ksh1 million.
