Mwanalima Adam Defends Coach Beldine Odemba After Midfield Role Controversy in FIFA Series
Harambee Starlets forward Mwanalima Adam has addressed concerns over her unexpected midfield role during the recently concluded FIFA Series at Nyayo National Stadium, a decision that had sparked debate among fans and put head coach Beldine Odemba under scrutiny.
Harambee Starlets delivered a solid campaign, finishing second in the tournament after securing a narrow 1-0 victory over India before falling 2-0 to Australia in their final match.
Despite the team’s overall strong showing, much of the attention shifted to Mwanahalima Adam’s deployment in a deeper role.
Traditionally known for her attacking prowess, the former Kansas City striker was instead tasked with operating as a number six, a defensive midfield position, a move that caught many supporters by surprise.
Mwanahalima Adam: Harambee Starlets Explains Midfield Role
Now, Mwanahalima Adam has stepped forward to explain the tactical decision and shed light on her role within the team setup.
Speaking after the final match, the HB Køge star explained that she was comfortable with the role she was assigned, noting that playing in a deeper midfield position is not new to her career.
She pointed out that since moving abroad, she has frequently been deployed in that area of the pitch at various clubs, including her stints in Turkey, the United States, and now in Denmark.
Mwanahalima Adam further clarified that operating in that position aligns with her experience and skill set, emphasising that she had no difficulty adapting to the role during the tournament.
Adam added that the surprise among local fans likely stems from limited awareness of how she has been utilised at club level outside the country, where she has consistently featured in a more withdrawn midfield capacity.
“I was okay because that has always been my position since I started playing outside the country. I have played in the midfield for Hakkarigücü Spor, Kansas City, and even now in Denmark; that’s my position. That’s the position I play, so I had no issue with that. It’s just that many Kenyans are unaware of that,” Mwanalima Adam said.
“The coach is doing great… where we have made mistakes, she will correct us, and we shall continue putting in the work.”
She added that the match against Australia helped them gain the relevant experience ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations to be held in Morocco.
