Despite opening the scoring and delivering a strong performance, Mbappe took issue with the crowd's behaviour, specifically their whistles aimed at players like Aurelien Tchouameni, Lucas Vazquez, and Ferland Mendy.
Mbappe’s emotional defense of Tchouameni
The controversy unfolded when Real Madrid fans began expressing their frustration in the wake of the team’s recent 5-2 loss to Barcelona.
During the match against Celta Vigo, the Bernabeu crowd directed their displeasure towards several players, with Tchouameni and Mendy receiving the harshest treatment.
Mbappe, who shares a close bond with Tchouameni from their time with the French national team, was visibly upset.
Celebrating his goal, the forward reportedly shouted, "You don’t whistle the badge," a clear message to fans criticising the team.
Later that night, he posted an Instagram story that hinted at his disapproval, further solidifying his stance against the fans’ actions, and Tchouameni himself responded to the situation with a message on Instagram, saying, “What doesn’t kill you...”
Ancelotti’s perspective on the Bernabeu whistles
Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti, a veteran of the Bernabeu’s often critical atmosphere, offered a pragmatic view on the fans’ reactions.
He described the whistles as a "wake-up call" for the team, acknowledging the frustrations stemming from the heavy loss to Barcelona.
“The Bernabeu whistled as a warning, and when the game got complicated, they pushed,” Ancelotti explained, adding, “It’s part of football here. Tchouameni, in particular, played a great game and showed his character.”
Despite the friction, Ancelotti praised the team’s response, highlighting their improved performance in extra time. While criticism is not new at the Bernabeu, the unity within the squad and their ability to overcome adversity will be crucial as the season progresses.
