Lewis Bandi, who joined Gor Mahia after a long injury layoff from the CHAN 2024 tournament, recently made his debut as a substitute in January 2026. The former AFC Leopards ace is now pushing for a starting place under Charles Akonnor.

On his part, Bryne Omondi is still recovering after surgery on a fractured fibula, while Sylvester Owino has also been sidelined in recent weeks due to an ankle injury affecting his availability for key matches.

Charles Akonnor, speaking ahead of the Mashemeji Derby, declined to provide any details regarding Lewis Bandi’s availability for the match, explaining that disclosing such information would undermine the team’s tactical approach and preparation.

The Gor Mahia coach instead emphasised that Lewis Bandi’s progress has been encouraging following his long spell on the sidelines.

He noted that Bandi has steadily regained match fitness and has been actively involved in recent training sessions and competitive appearances.

He further indicated that the technical bench is still assessing several options before making a final decision, with the final evaluation expected closer to matchday, when the starting lineup will be confirmed.

“I won't be able to tell you that. If I tell you, then it means I'm revealing my setup. But Bundy has done very well since his injury. He's had a couple of chances to play. He's still doing well. He's still pushing. But we don't know yet. On Sunday, we will know,” he told the media on Thursday.

Charles Akonnor Gives Update on Bryne Omondi and Sylvester Owino

Charles Akonnor added that final decisions on Sylvester Owino and Bryne Omondi’s availability would be made closer to the matchday, noting that their fitness is being closely monitored ahead of the match.

He explained that both players have been progressing well in training sessions, although their inclusion is still subject to late assessment based on how they respond in the final days before the game.

Akonnor added that the derby carries significant importance for the team, not only in terms of rivalry and pride but also as an opportunity to bounce back after a difficult run without goals in recent matches.

“Well, we're waiting till tomorrow or Saturday to confirm. But so far, it's been good. As you can see, they're training. They're doing very well. But it's not a guarantee that they will be available for the match,” he said.

“We're waiting to see how they improve. Well, it's a big match for all of us. Like we said, bragging rights and all that. But, you know, we've suffered enough not to have scored in our last three matches. We want to make sure we work very, very hard and to please the fans on that day.”

Meanwhile, AFC Leopards enter the derby looking to bounce back from a disappointing 3-0 defeat against Kenya Police. On their part, league leaders Gor Mahia also dropped points in their last outing, playing out a frustrating 0-0 draw against Bandari that left the gap at the top of the table at just three points.
