Video: Maja's Bordeaux suffer promotion setback after a fan sent Rodez's hero to hospital
Super Eagles forward Josh Maja and his French club Bordeaux watched their promotion bid suffer a decisive setback during the game against Rodez on Friday night.
Bordeaux hosted Rodez on the final day of the season in Ligue 2 with both sides needing to win.
Maja’s Bordeaux needed all three points to stay in the race for promotion to the Ligue 1 while Rodez needed the win to remain in the second tier.
Bordeaux vs Rodez abandoned
With 22 minutes played, the visitors took a shock lead when Lucas Buades put them ahead with a good goal.
While he celebrated the decisive lead with his Rodez teammates, a visibly angry individual walked up to him and pushed him over.
The match was subsequently suspended for 30 minutes per TalkSport as Buades and a teammate collapsed on the ground.
The Rodez hero was eventually taken to the hospital for concussion with the match suspended sine die by the centre referee, Nicolas Rainville.
What this means for Maja and Bordeaux
The 24-year-old, who recently made the team of the season in Ligue 2 after an impressive season for the club, is facing another year with Bordeaux in the Ligue 2.
Maja’s 16 goals and six assists had his French club on the brink of Ligue 1 promotion just a season after their relegation.
However, there are suggestions that Rodez, who were 1-0 ahead before the game was suspended due to the attack, could be awarded three points.
If this happens, Bordeaux will remain in the French second division with Rodez, who will avoid relegation to the third tier.
