Lionel Messi: World's greatest player gets tournament named after him

Lionel Messi’s name is officially being immortalised in yet another way, this time through a youth football tournament that will celebrate the next generation of stars.

The Lionel Messi Cup will debut in December, bringing together some of the world’s biggest clubs for a week of elite youth competition in Miami.

The inaugural edition of the Lionel Messi Cup will take place from December 9 to 14, with eight U16 teams set to participate.

Representing England will be Chelsea and Manchester City, joined by European and South American heavyweights Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan, River Plate, Newell’s Old Boys, and Messi’s current club, Inter Miami.

The tournament format is designed to mirror major international competitions, with the eight teams divided into two groups of four, competing in a round-robin stage before advancing to play-offs.

Matches will be hosted primarily at Inter Miami’s Chase Stadium and the club’s state-of-the-art training facilities.

Tim Pastore, CEO of 525 Rosario, Messi’s media company, said the competition represents far more than just football.

“The Messi Cup is where today’s game meets tomorrow’s players,” he explained. “It is an opportunity to celebrate talent, culture, and community, while creating legacies and bonds that will endure well beyond the pitch.”

The Faena Forum will serve as the hub for an industry summit, bringing together leaders from sports, culture, and business to discuss the future of youth football and its growing global reach.

Meanwhile, the official Messi Cup Summit Party will take place at Pao by Paul Qui, offering a vibrant social backdrop to the week-long event.

As December approaches, the world’s eyes will once again turn to Miami, where the greatest name in football will shine a light on the stars of tomorrow.
