ZESCO suffered a 1-0 loss to South African giants Kaizer Chiefs at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban in what was their fourth group stage match of the competition.

The nine-time Zambian champions came into the match knowing only a win would do but in the 14th minute, Congolese forward Glody Lilepo fired a low shot past Opiyo and that turned out to be the only goal.

Opiyo was also called into action, saving a close-range effort from Mfundo Vilakazi and Lilepo before the first half ended and was also at hand to keep out shots from Thulani Mabaso and Lebohang Maboe.

Where Does Defeat Leave ZESCO?

However, with ZESCO not finding the breakthrough, Opiyo and his teammates were eliminated with two games still to play.

It has been a poor group stage campaign for Zesco, who also lost 1-0 to Kaizer Chiefs last weekend, and had suffered 1-0 loss and 3-2 defeats to Zamalek and Al Masry respectively.

With six points to play for with Al Masry and Chiefs on seven points each, ZESCO cannot get into the top two and will now be playing for pride in their final games against the two Egyptian sides.

Opiyo, who joined the club this season after leaving Leopards, was getting a rare start in goal but he ended up on the losing side.
