Andy Cole Omolo: A New Chapter in Japan

Andy Cole Omolo, who is currently attached to KCB Rugby Club and part of the Kenya Simbas environment, views the transition as a defining moment in his career progression.

“This is a big step for me and the first step towards becoming a professional rugby player. I am excited about the opportunity to grow both academically and on the pitch in Japan. I extend gratitude to Wazi Wazi and DBA Africa for their relentless pursuit of this chance,” said Omolo.

His transfer to Japan is expected to expose him to a more structured and highly competitive rugby system, widely regarded as one of the fastest-growing environments in world rugby.

Born and raised in Chavakali, Omolo’s journey into rugby began in a modest setting. He first encountered the sport at Walodeya Primary School, where he began playing in Class 7, although football initially remained his main interest.

“I grew up in Chavakali and went to Walodeya Primary School. I started playing rugby in Class 7, but I wasn’t very serious at the time; I was still focused on football,” he recalled.

His commitment to rugby only fully developed later, as he began to recognise his potential in the sport. Omolo’s development accelerated after joining Chavakali High School in 2019, where he committed fully to rugby and quickly established himself as a key figure within the school’s setup.

“When I joined Chavakali High School, that’s when I really focused on rugby. I trained with the Kabras age-grade team, played for Western Chipu while still in high school, and had the privilege of captaining Chavakali for two years,” he said.

His leadership qualities and consistent performances helped him gain recognition at the regional and youth levels, setting the foundation for his future progression.

Rising Through University and National Ranks

Following his high school career, Omolo joined Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), where he gained valuable experience in the Kenya Cup.

He featured in three matches before the team suffered relegation, but his performances were strong enough to earn him a call-up to the national Under-20 team in 2023.

This exposure marked a turning point, raising his profile within Kenya’s rugby circles and opening the door to elite club opportunities.

He later secured a move to KCB Rugby Club, one of Kenya’s most successful rugby sides, where he continued his development under a professional setup.

KCB Head Coach Andrew Amonde praised Omolo’s discipline and steady growth, highlighting the value of his move to Japan.

“Andy has shown tremendous discipline and work ethic since joining KCB. His progression has been impressive, and this opportunity in Japan is well deserved. We believe this move will expose him to a higher level of competition and help him reach his full potential.”

Omolo’s move to Tenri University reflects the expanding opportunities for Kenyan rugby players to combine education with international sporting exposure.

It also highlights the increasing recognition of Kenya’s rugby development systems, which continue to produce talent capable of competing on global stages.

His journey now enters a new phase in Japan, where he will aim to further develop his game while pursuing academic growth.
