Kenya Sevens reveal desire for a quick return to World Series behind flying start at Challenger Series
Kenya Sevens are keen to ensure they make a quick return to the World Sevens Series by putting in impressive performances at the ongoing 2024 Challenger Series.
Shujaa stayed true to their ambitions by thrashing Mexico 41-0 in their opening match before beating Uganda 29-1 in the second to qualify for the cup quarter-final with a game to spare in Dubai on Friday.
Head coach Kevin Wambua feels that is the only way they will bounce back to the top flight at the first time of asking, following their relegation from the World Sevens Series for the first time in 19 years, last May.
“We have a goal of getting back to the circuit in the same season. We know it will not be easy but we have the talent and we have been training well so we are just ready,” Wambua told World Rugby.
Co-captain Tony Omondi shares the same sentiments and has explained how each player has stepped up to the challenge.
“We know we have a chance of going back to the [World] Series through this Challenger Series and that is what we are chasing,” said Omondi.

“We are taking a game at a time. Like you have seen, we played against Mexico and won and now we focus on Uganda. For us, every game is a final and that is what we are doing because it demands everything from each player.”
Kevin Wekesa scored two tries with Nygel Amaitsa, Brian Tanga, Patrick Odongo, Vincent Onyala and John Okoth also touching down while Anthony Omondi converted three of them for the big win against Mexico.
Amaitsa would score twice against Uganda with Odongo and Wekesa also touching down, Omondi converting once against the Ugandans and Shujaa will now take on Germany on Saturday with a relaxed mind now that they are already in the cup quarter-finals.
