Speaking after City's Premier League win over Everton, Guardiola confirmed he understands why Alvarez sought a move away from the Etihad in 2024, despite the club's success.“Maybe I’d love to have him… but I understand why he left,” Guardiola told reporters.

The Argentina international, who won every major trophy except the Carabao Cup during his two-year stint at City, sought more consistent minutes as a leading striker.

His desire to be the focal point of a top European club led him to Atlético, where he has since validated that decision by scoring 29 goals for the Spanish side last season, thriving under manager Diego Simeone.
