"I will never forget Anfield" - Semenyo speaks after racist abuse against Liverpool
Antoine Semenyo was a key figure in the Premier League opener, a 4-2 Liverpool victory over Bournemouth.
He scored both goals for the Cherries, but the match was also notable for a racist incident directed at Semenyo that caused the referee to briefly stop play around the 30-minute mark.
What Semenyo wrote
A day after the match, the Ghanaian forward posted on social media that he would never forget his night at Anfield, not because of the abuse, but because of what followed.
"It will forever be etched in my memory, not for the words of one person, but for the unity of the entire football family.
"I'm grateful to my teammates for their support, to the Liverpool players and fans who showed true character, and to the officials who handled the situation professionally," he wrote, as reported by Abola.
"Scoring those two goals was like speaking the only language that truly matters on the pitch. This is why I play: for moments like these, for my teammates, for everyone who believes in what this beautiful game can be," he added.
The Ghanaian player also expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support he received off the pitch. "The overwhelming messages from across the football world remind me why I love this sport," he concluded.
