I used my own Money - Jay-Jay Okocha reveals struggles during his tenure as Delta FA chairman

Former Super Eagles star and football legend Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha has opened up about the challenges he encountered during his time as Chairman of the Delta State Football Association (FA).

Okocha was elected chairman of the Delta State Football Association (DSFA) on February 21, 2015. He served from 2015 until he resigned before the end of his tenure.

Speaking candidly about his experience, Okocha disclosed that his efforts to develop football in the state were hindered by poor collaboration and lack of institutional support.

The former Nigerian international revealed that he personally funded the state’s football programs during his tenure, highlighting the absence of financial and structural backing from key stakeholders.

“I had a boss that was not willing to work with me. I was a bit uncomfortable, and he didn’t understand me well,” Okocha said.

He added, “I was using my own money to run the FA. I did it for two years, even organized the FA Cup with my money. But in the second year, I didn’t have the structure or resources to attract investors.”

Okocha further explained that the lack of cooperation made it difficult to achieve his vision for football development in Delta State.

“I said there was no need to continue because I’m not the kind of person who likes to stay where they don’t appreciate what I do,” he added.

Despite the setbacks, Okocha remains one of Nigeria’s most respected football icons.
