Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti has hinted that Neymar Jr. could still make a return to the Seleção squad ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, provided the forward regains full fitness and form.
The five-time world champions, who cruised past South Korea 5–0 in Seoul in their last outing, continue preparations for next year’s tournament with a friendly clash against Japan on Tuesday at the Tokyo Stadium.
What Ancelotti said
Ancelotti, who became Brazil’s first non-native coach in six decades after his appointment in May, has already guided the team through qualification for the tournament in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Although Neymar, Brazil’s all-time top scorer, was left out of Ancelotti’s most recent squad, the Italian tactician insists the door remains open for the 33-year-old Santos star.
“If Neymar is in good condition, then of course he can fit into the national team. If Neymar is fit, then he can play in any team in the world,” Ancelotti said.
Neymar has endured a difficult spell with Santos, scoring just three goals in 13 league appearances this season as injuries continue to limit his game time. Despite his struggles, the forward remains one of Brazil’s most technically gifted players, having created 29 chances this season even without registering an assist.
The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star last featured for Brazil in 2023 but continues to train in hopes of earning a recall for what could be his final World Cup appearance.
While Neymar battles for fitness, a new generation of Brazilian stars is flourishing under Ancelotti.
Eighteen-year-old Estevão, who recently joined Chelsea, scored twice in the win over South Korea, while Real Madrid duo Vinícius Júnior and Rodrygo, both of whom Ancelotti managed at the Bernabéu, were also on target.
