Harambee Stars Abroad: Erick Ouma Nears Return as Kenyan Stars Record Mixed Results in Europe
Harambee Stars defender Erick 'Marcelo' Ouma has taken a significant step toward his full return to action, earning a spot in Raków Częstochowa's matchday squad for their Polish Ekstraklasa clash against Korona Kielce on Friday.
The left-back was named on the bench for the first time since rupturing his Achilles ligament in August of last year.
While he did not feature in the 2-0 victory, his inclusion signals that his recovery is nearing its final stages following surgery on September 5.
Raków secured a crucial win to bolster their title aspirations, scoring two goals in quick succession early in the second half. Lamine Diaby-Fadiga broke the deadlock just three minutes after the restart, and Croatian midfielder Marko Bulat doubled the lead in the 57th minute, sealing the team's third consecutive league victory.
The result moves Raków to within five points of league leaders Lech Poznań, who have played one more game.
Mixed Fortunes for Kenyans in Poland
While Ouma celebrated his return, it was a frustrating weekend for fellow Kenyan international Timothy 'Babu' Ouma. His club, Lech Poznań, dropped vital points in the title race after being held to a 1-1 draw by relegation-threatened Arka Gdynia.
Poznań's lead at the top has been cut to seven points, with second-placed Gornik Zabrze and Raków holding two games and one game in hand, respectively. Timothy Ouma, who played the full match last week, was introduced as a halftime substitute and played the entire second half.
Kenyans Abroad: A Weekend Roundup
In Sweden's third tier, young Kenyan talent Andreas Odhiambo made his second appearance for Enköpings SK, coming on as a late substitute in their 2-1 victory over AFC Eskilstuna.
His compatriot, midfielder Paul Osama, was named in the matchday squad for the first time since his move from Murang'a Seal but remained an unused substitute.
Elsewhere, Harambee Stars defender Daniel Anyembe played the full 90 minutes for Viborg FF in the Danish Superliga Championship Group, though his side fell to a 1-0 defeat against Sønderjyske. It was Anyembe's third consecutive full game for the club, which sits fourth in the six-team table.
In Romania, midfielder Richard Odada also completed a full match as his team, UTA Arad, secured a 1-0 win over FK Csíkszereda Miercurea Ciuc in the Superliga Relegation Group. The victory helps Arad maintain their position in the top two, strengthening their bid to avoid relegation.
