FKF Wrangles: Key Sponsor Weighs in on Suspension of Hussein Mohammed
Football Kenya Federation (FKF) sponsors SportPesa have weighed in on the ongoing wrangles within the federation following a move to force president Hussein Mohammed out.
A section of FKF National Executive Committee (NEC) members resolved to have Mohammed, nominated NEC member Yusuf Ibrahim and acting CEO Dennis Gicheru step aside over allegations of misuse of public funds while installing vice president McDonald Mariga as acting president last Friday.
This follows a controversial insurance deal allegedly given to a single-sourced newly-registered company, amounting to over Ksh42 million, reportedly bypassing well-established firms that submitted lower bids.
While Mohammed has dismissed it as a plot to kick him out and FIFA also weighed in on the matter, one of FKF’s main sponsors SportPesa is also keen to have Kenya’s football governing body running smoothly.
SportPesa’s Statement on FKF Wrangles
“With respect to the allegations currently under review, SportPesa’s position is that all such matters must be subjected to a thorough, independent investigation in line with due process. Including any change of leadership at FKF,” read a statement from SportPesa.
“We call for a swift, transparent, and fair resolution that upholds accountability while safeguarding the integrity and progress of Kenyan football, for the sake of the players, clubs, and fans who remain at the heart of the game.
“SportPesa remains a committed, long-term partner to Kenyan football and the broader sports ecosystem. We will continue to support initiatives that strengthen the game, deepen its commercial viability, and unlock opportunities for Kenyan talent, while standing for integrity, accountability, and sustainable growth across the sport.”
The gaming firm signed a deal valued at Ksh1.12 billion for 10 years with FKF last year which saw the top flight rebranded to SportPesa League and there are fears that leadership wrangles within the federation could affect a number of existing partnerships or put off potential suitors.
