After two decades of donning the iconic No. 5 jersey for Nigeria, Super Falcons legend Ebi Onome has publicly endorsed Ashleigh Plumptre as her ideal successor, citing their shared birthday, comparable energy, and a seamless continuation of legacy.

Onome, who represented Nigeria with distinction for 20 years, has consistently praised Plumptre's performances for the Super Falcons.

Her belief that the England-born defender is the rightful heir to her cherished shirt number was reiterated following Plumptre's impressive displays, particularly in helping the Falcons reach the WAFCON 2024 semi-finals in Morocco without conceding a goal.

Plumptre now wears the No. 5 jersey, a change from the No. 4 she wore at the previous WAFCON in 2022 and the No. 2 at the FIFA Women's World Cup.

Ashleigh Plumptre is back to the Super Falcons with a new shirt number.

In a heartfelt post on her X account, Onome expressed her pride: "Best replacement for my #5 jersey, which means a lot to me after 20 years.”

“Same birthday, 8 May, just a name change from Ebi to Plumptre. The energy, discipline, consistency, and dedication are almost the same. I am proud. The Legacy continues.”

Plumptre, born on May 8, 1998, plays as a centre-back for Saudi Premier League club Al-Ittihad. She acknowledged Onome’s words on the same platform, responding: “Grateful! Thank you for the legacy you led and continue to leave”

Meanwhile, earlier last month, Onome was selected for the prestigious FIFA Players Executive Programme.

This initiative aims to support players off the pitch by preparing both active and retired players and coaches, men and women, for high-level roles in football management.

The programme focuses on equipping them with essential skills to smoothly transition into executive positions within clubs or other football institutions, addressing the financial, personal, and lifestyle challenges that often accompany retirement.

FIFA designed the programme to raise the standards of the game by providing participants with the necessary tools to successfully run football organisations.

It also emphasises creating a supportive community where every player and coach feels valued and understood.
