Victor Boniface’s long-awaited transfer to AC Milan has taken an unusual turn, with the striker being subjected to an exceptionally detailed medical examination spread across two days.

The Rossoneri appear determined to leave no room for risk before finalising his loan move from Bayer Leverkusen.

Milan leave nothing to chance with Boniface’s health checks

Boniface began his medical process on Friday, moving between Milan’s club facilities, the official CONI (Italian Olympic Committee) testing centre, and the Galeazzi Hospital for advanced checks.

In a surprising move, the club even recalled their trusted orthopaedic surgeon from vacation specifically to oversee the procedure, highlighting the seriousness with which they are approaching the striker’s condition.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Milan were not fully satisfied after Friday’s tests and have scheduled further examinations for Saturday morning before officially greenlighting the deal.

The arrangement for the Nigerian forward is a €5 million loan with an option to buy for a further €25 million, but the heavy emphasis on medical scrutiny reflects Milan’s wariness over his injury history.

Injury past explains Milan’s cautious approach

Milan’s hesitation is not without reason. Boniface endured several muscular issues last season that limited him to 27 appearances, though he still managed an impressive return of 11 goals and two assists for Bayer Leverkusen.

More concerning, however, is his history of serious knee injuries after two separate anterior cruciate ligament surgeries in 2019 and 2020, both of which required lengthy recovery periods.

With those red flags in mind, Milan are determined to ensure that their potential new striker is fully fit before committing to such a significant investment.

If he clears the final stage of testing, Boniface could become a key piece in Max Allegri’s plans for the new Serie A season, adding firepower but also carrying a weight of expectation that his body can withstand the demands of Italian football.
