Ex-Premier League star tips Morocco to win AFCON ahead of Nigeria, others
Former Premier League defender Nayef Aguerd believes Morocco are the favourites to win the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on home soil, tipping the Atlas Lions to outshine powerhouses like Nigeria, Egypt, and Ivory Coast.
The ex-West Ham United star made the bold claim while reflecting on Morocco’s historic run of 16 consecutive victories, the longest winning streak ever recorded by a national team.
Aguerd hails Morocco’s record-breaking form
Speaking at a press conference attended by Get French Football News, Aguerd couldn’t hide his pride at Morocco’s incredible achievement. “It wasn’t easy – even with the quality of our squad and the infrastructure we have in Morocco, 16 straight wins is difficult,” he said.
The Atlas Lions’ streak saw them surpass the previous record of 15 victories, held jointly by Spain (2008) and Germany (2014), both of whom went on to win the World Cup after their runs.
For Aguerd, that parallel only adds to Morocco’s belief. “I’m proud of the coach, he’s given so much to Moroccan football. We have a young group with a lot of talent. It’s a record, and hopefully we can go for a 17th win,” he added.
‘The trophy must stay in Morocco’ says Aguerd
With the 2025 AFCON set to take place between 21 December 2025 and 18 January 2026, Morocco will host the tournament for the first time since 1988, having withdrawn from the 2015 edition due to Ebola concerns.
Aguerd is confident that home advantage could prove decisive. “The AFCON is at home, and we can’t afford to make mistakes. It’s a positive kind of pressure – I hope the trophy stays in Morocco,” he declared.
The Atlas Lions, drawn in Group A alongside Mali, Zambia, and Comoros, will face stiff competition from Africa’s top sides, including Mohamed Salah’s Egypt, Nigeria’s Super Eagles, and defending champions Ivory Coast.
But with momentum, confidence, and history on their side, Aguerd believes Morocco are primed to finally bring continental glory home.
