Kenya’s Rising Starlets saw their journey to the Women’s U20 World Cup come to a crushing end following a loss on post-match penalties to Tanzania in Dar es Salaam on Saturday.

Rising Starlets headed into the second leg carrying a 1-0 advantage from the first leg following Elizabeth Mideva’s 85th minute goal at Ulinzi Complex last weekend.

That meant they needed to avoid defeat to make it to the second and final round of the qualifiers.

It seemed to be going to plan until the 52nd minute when Tanzania were awarded a penalty and the hosts scored to draw the two-legged tie 1-1 at the Azam Complex.

Shoot-out Heartbreak for Kenya

Neither side found the breakthrough and at the final whistle, with both teams tied at 1-1, the game headed straight to penalties.

Here is where Jackline Juma’s charges met their waterloo as Tanzania won 3-1 in the shoot-outs to proceed to the next round.

That was the end of the road for Kenya as Tanzania now set up a tough match against Cameroon and if they win, they will clinch a coveted ticket to the Women’s U20 World Cup set to be staged in Poland.

It was a hard lesson for Kenya as their lack of cutting edge at home came back to bite them hard, having failed to utilise their chances in Nairobi.
