‘Don’t Underestimate Gabon’ - Mikel Obi warns Super Eagles ahead of World Cup playoffs
Former Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi has issued a stern warning to Nigeria’s national team ahead of their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff against Gabon, urging the players to remain focused and avoid complacency.
Nigeria will face the Panthers of Gabon this Thursday in the semi-final stage of the African World Cup qualifying playoffs.
A victory would set up a decisive final clash against either Cameroon or DR Congo, with the winner advancing to the Intercontinental Playoffs for a place at the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
What Mikel Obi said
Speaking on his official podcast, the former Chelsea midfielder emphasised the need for full concentration, warning the Super Eagles against looking beyond their immediate opponents.
“Go into that game and play like this is the last game you will ever play in your life,” Mikel said.
He added, “Win that game, and then we can think about either Cameroon or someone else. The immediate challenge is the only one that matters.”
Mikel, who captained Nigeria to AFCON glory in 2013 and represented the country at two World Cups, noted that overconfidence has been a historic weakness for the Super Eagles in crucial fixtures.
