David Munyua: Dream Come True for Kenyan Darts Star as Chelsea Fulfills His Christmas Wish
After a stunning upset at the World Darts Championship, Kenyan player David Munyua has been rewarded with a trip to watch his beloved Chelsea FC play at Stamford Bridge.
Munyua, a veterinarian by trade, made headlines last week with one of the biggest shocks in the history of the PDC World Darts Championship. The 30-year-old came back from two sets down to defeat world number 18 Mike de Decker in a thrilling first-round match.
Although his tournament run ended in the second round with a loss to Kevin Doets, Munyua's historic victory captured the attention of the sporting world. Following his win, he shared his ultimate Christmas wish with reporters.
"I’m a big fan of Chelsea. Since I was 10 years old, I have supported Chelsea," Munyua revealed. "If I have the chance to visit, that would be a big thing, not for me, but for fans in Kenya."
Drogba’s Influence on Munyua
He explained that his support for the club began during the era of Ivorian stars Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou. "They were doing crazy stuff. Didier Drogba is from the Ivory Coast. So I started supporting them," he said.
On Sunday, that wish came true. Chelsea FC hosted Munyua as a special guest for their Premier League fixture against Aston Villa. The club announced his visit on their official X account, posting: "Fresh from the World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace, David Munyua is today fulfilling his lifelong dream of visiting Stamford Bridge."
Munyua's journey from a full-time vet in Kenya to an underdog hero at Alexandra Palace has been one of the standout sports stories of the year. While the result on the day may have been disappointing for the lifelong fan—Chelsea lost 2-1 to Aston Villa after a second-half comeback—the experience capped off a remarkable and potentially career-defining week for the Kenyan darts sensation.
