Inter Milan appear to have received a significant boost with reports suggesting captain and leading goalscorer Lautaro Martinez is set to feature in the team’s final Serie A game against Como on Friday.

The 2022 World Cup-winning striker is also expected to start the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain on May 31.

Martinez's crucial comeback

The Argentine forward was forced off during the Champions League semi-final first leg against Barcelona in late April due to a flexor injury.

Martinez missed Inter’s subsequent Serie A victory over Hellas Verona but made a swift return to start the Champions League semi-final second leg, a 4-3 win at San Siro, less than a week after sustaining the injury.

However, Lautaro has since missed Inter's last two Serie A matches against Torino and Lazio and has not yet trained with his teammates.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Football Italia), Martinez is expected to rejoin first-team training in midweek, placing him in contention for the Como match.

While it is uncertain if the Inter captain will start against Cesc Fabregas’s team, the story suggests he is almost certain to feature, either from the bench or from the start.

The Serie A match against Como is a crucial title decider, with the Nerazzurri one point behind Napoli at the top of the standings.

What’s next for Inter?

An unlikely scenario could still see Inter and Napoli faceoff in a one-off clash for the Scudetto after Friday’s match, a fixture that must take place before May 31’s Champions League final.
