CAF Launches Probe Into Al Hilal vs Rulani Mokwena's MC Alger Champions League Clash
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has initiated an investigation following widespread confrontations that erupted after the CAF Champions League match between Sudan's Al Hilal and Algeria's MC Alger on Friday, November 21.
The Group C opener, held at Al Hilal's temporary home ground, the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali, Rwanda, concluded with a 2-1 victory for the Sudanese side. Due to the ongoing civil war in Sudan, Al-Hilal are currently competing in the Rwandan Premier League.
The tightly contested match saw Al-Hilal captain Mohamed Abdelrahman come off the bench to score the decisive goal in the 75th minute.
However, the final whistle was followed by heated altercations between the two teams, requiring police intervention to separate the players as they headed to their respective dressing rooms.
During a fiercely contested game, Al Hilal's captain and substitute, Mohamed Abdelrahman, proved to be the hero, scoring the decisive goal in the 75th minute shortly after entering the match. The hosts were later reduced to 10 men when midfielder Salah Adel received a second yellow card, resulting in his dismissal.
Despite their numerical advantage in the closing stages, the Algerian visitors, managed by coach Rulani Mokwena, struggled to create significant scoring opportunities and failed to find an equaliser.
CAF to Investigate the Match Incident
According to reports from Pan African Football, CAF will now examine the incident. Based on previous cases, both clubs could be subject to disciplinary measures for their involvement in the brawl.
This is not the first time MC Alger has been involved in such an incident. The club faced scrutiny for a similar post-match altercation last season following their CAF Confederation Cup quarter-final against Orlando Pirates, and they may now face further sanctions.
“Am I not afraid to get sanctioned? This is not my concern. My concern is the performance of my team on the pitch during the 90 minutes. We were not good enough today (Saturday) in most moments of the game and that's my concern - the other stuff is not for me,” Rulani Mokwena shared in the post-match press conference.
Meanwhile, Al Hilal is scheduled to make its debut in the Rwandan Premier League this Wednesday against Police FC.
Following that domestic fixture, the Sudanese champions will travel to the DR Congo to face FC Saint Eloi Lupopo in their second Champions League group stage match on Sunday. Meanwhile, MC Alger will prepare to host South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns this Friday.
