Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy may have seen one of his dream jobs become available but the chances of him landing it remain very slim.

McCarthy last week admitted that he would jump at the opportunity if one of Scotland’s two top clubs Rangers and Celtic had a vacancy and that just happened on Monday.

Brendan Rodgers resigned as Celtic manager on Monday, opening up an opportunity at the club, with veteran coach Martin O’Neil and ex-player Shaun Maloney handed the role on an interim basis.

Celtic are still searching for their next permanent manager and a number of names have emerged as frontrunners but McCarthy is not one of them.

As per Sky Sports, Celtic will not be going back in for ex-boss Ange Postecoglou, who was dismissed after 39 days at Premier League club Nottingham Forest this month, but are looking at several other candidates.

Who Are the Leading Candidates for the Celtic Job?

The Hoops are believed to be looking for a younger, hungry and progressive manager, which fits McCarthy, but Ipswich Town’s Kieran McKenna and Wales boss Craig Bellamy have emerged as the early frontrunners.

Other names being linked to the role are Bodo/Glimt's Kjetil Knutsen and Club Brugge's Nicky Hayen as well as former Celtic striker Robbie Keane and ex-coach Damien Duff.

However, McKenna has a contract at Ipswich up to 2028 and the English Championships club are reportedly not keen to lose him with a hefty compensation likely to be asked to lure him away.

Meanwhile, Bellamy is also keen to help his country Wales qualify for the 2026 World Cup and is reportedly focused on their next round of qualifying matches in November while Knutsen and Hayen are in jobs which might be difficult to get them from midseason.

That opens a window of opportunity for others as Celtic will likely cast their net wide in search of Rodgers’ replacement and whether that includes the Harambee Stars boss remains to be seen.
