Benni McCarthy: Was Being Too Loyal Worth It

"Yeah, of course, because sometimes you think, was being too loyal worth it for all this?" Benni McCarthy told Soccer Laduma, acknowledging the internal conflict he faced.

Jose Mourinho, who had guided McCarthy to UEFA Champions League glory at FC Porto, was keen to bring the striker to Stamford Bridge.

The move would have seen Benni McCarthy link up with world-class talent like Didier Drogba and challenge for the Premier League title.

However, Benni McCarthy's unwavering commitment to his agent ultimately led him to decline the offer. "Sometimes I just sit down, and you think to yourself, yes, maybe I was too loyal to my agent," he admitted. "If I had put myself probably first, just this one time, I would have played for Chelsea."

While the "what if" remains, Benni McCarthy stands by the principles that guided his decision, emphasising the deep-seated bond he shared with his representative.

"When you've been with someone your whole life, I think loyalty and respect overrule everything," he explained. "I don't forget what they did for me; they don't forget what I did for them."

The former Bafana Bafana international believes that his integrity defined his character, even if it meant sacrificing a career-defining transfer.

"My principles go a long way; it says who you are. My word is my bond, and if you don't have that, then everything goes," he said.

Benni McCarthy conceded that while the chance to win a Premier League title is a milestone he will always lament missing, the lesson in loyalty is one he carries with pride.

"You will never, ever get rid of that regret… maybe I could have been disloyal just that one time, because that was my biggest dream," he added.
