Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy has weighed in on the predicament facing Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim.

Amorim has come under pressure after United started the 2025-26 season in less than impressive fashion with two wins in five games as well as one draw and two losses.

United’s displays have left fans and observers disappointed and there are even calls for him to be sacked while the Portuguese coach has stuck to his philosophy, especially his formation of three at the back and two central midfielders, despite rival teams exposing its weaknesses.

McCarthy, however, feels it is unfair to be calling for the 40-year-old’s head given he was hugely successful in his last job at Sporting Lisbon, where he won five trophies, among them two Portuguese league titles, in four years.

“He is a part of the best out of this new generation (of managers) that is just coming out after what he has achieved at Sporting Lisbon,” McCarthy said on Sky Sports as quoted by Mozzart Sport.

Benni Tells United Fans to Lower Expectations

“I think if they give him time, if they give him what he wants, he can bring in the players he wants to bring,” he added, advising United to stick with Amorim.

Amorim has the worst win percentage for any United manager with just nine victories in 32 Premier League games, having drawn seven and lost 16, but McCarthy wants United fans to lower their expectations, saying the current coach is working in a different era and under difficult circumstances, unlike when the Red Devils were a dominant force under legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

“There are no easy games, so you can't guarantee that he will win like in the past when United had a golden era when Fergie (Ferguson) was in charge and teams looked a little bit easy and United had a solid team that knew what winning was about,” said the South African tactician.

Amorim is United’s sixth permanent manager since Ferguson retired in 2013 but the club still looks miles away from returning to their glory days.

The Portuguese coach took over from Dutchman Erik ten Hag, who McCarthy worked under for two years from 2022-2024 as his attacking coach, before he left after the 2023-24 season, with the ex-Ajax manager getting sacked from United in October 2024 before Amorim was appointed the following month.
